    Of these five would be elected by citizens which only in the Four Communes could an African hope to win and five by African subjects. This paper argues that geopolitics played a prominent role in influencing the abrupt halt of the revolution that resulted in the murder of Thomas Sankara and the establishment of an authoritarian government under Blaise Compaore. I could not find any book in English that solely focused on this country — not even a travel book. No territory could be formally claimed prior to being effectively occupied. At the grassroots, women played an active role in the independence struggle across French West Africa.

    Women made up almost one-fourth of the civil service and held positions previously closed to them, in medicine, law, business, and university teaching. In about one-sixth of the students at the National University of Ivory Coast were women, and the number of women in the salaried work force had also increased. Theft is a problem, and fraud ranges from the banal to the brutal.
